Why Acorda Therapeutics Shares Jumped

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Acorda Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ACOR  ) , a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company with a focus on central nervous system disorders, jumped as much as 13% after the company reported positive phase 2 trial data for experimental drug Ampyra for the treatment of post-stroke deficits.

So what: In mid-stage trials, 83 patients who had previously had an ischemic stroke within six months of enrollment and had other chronic motor deficits (in this case, a deficit would be considered impaired walking ability or impaired dexterity) were given Ampyra or the placebo twice daily for 14 days. The results demonstrated that Ampyra improved walking ability for those who had suffered an ischemic stroke. The data also showed that Ampyra provided patients with a positive improvement in functional independence over the placebo. Ampyra was well tolerated by those who took it, with predominantly minor side effects.

Now what: Now this looks like even more reason why Acorda Therapeutics should be on big pharma's buy list! I've been saying for more than a year now that Acorda would make a fantastic takeover target for a pharmaceutical company looking to bolster its CNS-line of medications. Acorda is profitable, has nearly $6 in net cash per share, and has six ongoing clinical trials. What more do you need from a biotechnology company?

Why Energizer Holdings's Earnings Are Outstanding

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Energizer Holdings (NYSE: ENR  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Source: S&P Capital IQ. Data is current as of last fully reported fiscal quarter. Dollar values in millions. FCF = free cash flow. FY = fiscal year. TTM = trailing 12 months.

Over the past 12 months, Energizer Holdings generated $567.0 million cash while it booked net income of $394.9 million. That means it turned 12.4% of its revenue into FCF. That sounds pretty impressive.

All cash is not equal
Unfortunately, the cash flow statement isn't immune from nonsense, either. That's why it pays to take a close look at the components of cash flow from operations, to make sure that the cash flows are of high quality. What does that mean? To me, it means they need to be real and replicable in the upcoming quarters, rather than being offset by continual cash outflows that don't appear on the income statement (such as major capital expenditures).

For instance, cash flow based on cash net income and adjustments for non-cash income-statement expenses (like depreciation) is generally favorable. An increase in cash flow based on stiffing your suppliers (by increasing accounts payable for the short term) or shortchanging Uncle Sam on taxes will come back to bite investors later. The same goes for decreasing accounts receivable; this is good to see, but it's ordinary in recessionary times, and you can only increase collections so much. Finally, adding stock-based compensation expense back to cash flows is questionable when a company hands out a lot of equity to employees and uses cash in later periods to buy back those shares.

Top Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now

So how does the cash flow at Energizer Holdings look? Take a peek at the chart below, which flags questionable cash flow sources with a red bar.

Source: S&P Capital IQ. Data is current as of last fully reported fiscal quarter. Dollar values in millions. TTM = trailing 12 months.

When I say "questionable cash flow sources," I mean items such as changes in taxes payable, tax benefits from stock options, and asset sales, among others. That's not to say that companies booking these as sources of cash flow are weak, or are engaging in any sort of wrongdoing, or that everything that comes up questionable in my graph is automatically bad news. But whenever a company is getting more than, say, 10% of its cash from operations from these dubious sources, investors ought to make sure to refer to the filings and dig in.

With questionable cash flows amounting to only -0.3% of operating cash flow, Energizer Holdings's cash flows look clean. Overall, the biggest drag on FCF came from capital expenditures, which consumed 16.0% of cash from operations.

A Foolish final thought
Most investors don't keep tabs on their companies' cash flow. I think that's a mistake. If you take the time to read past the headlines and crack a filing now and then, you're in a much better position to spot potential trouble early. Better yet, you'll improve your odds of finding the underappreciated home-run stocks that provide the market's best returns.

Selling to fickle consumers is a tough business for Energizer Holdings or anyone else in the space. But some companies are better equipped to face the future than others. Gabelli Revealed Adding Xyratex to Its Equity Portfolio, Should You Too?

According to GuruFocus Real Time Picks, on March 7, Mario Gabelli (Trades, Portfolio), the chairman and chief executive officer of GAMCO Investors Inc. added Xyratex Ltd. (XRTX) at an average price of $13.17 and currently holds 742,642 shares of the stock, worth 0.05% of his portfolio.

So let's take a look at this company and try to explain to investors the reasons this is an apparently appealing investment opportunity in a declining price environment.

Reduce Space and Administrative Costs

In order to help customers fulfill computing requirements, in November 2013, the firm announced the newest member of the ClusterStor family of HPC and Big Data engineered storage solutions – the ClusterStor 9000. It is projected to deliver up to 50% more performance, is half as fast as the previous top array, in the same rack space compared to previous ClusterStor generations. ClusterStor 9000 will be rolled out this year.

Strategic Acquisition

Seagate Technology (STX) has the ability to look for strategic acquisitions that easily synergize with the current operations. As a consequence, Seagate is going to acquire Xyratex, whose shares went up 27.3% on the announcement day and remain at that price level. The deal will help Seagate acquire testing equipment for its hard disk drives (HDD) along with storage systems to analyze and manage network data. It is expected that the deal will close in mid-2014, and add about $500 million or more in revenue in its fiscal year 2015.

Analyst Recommendation

The firm is currently Zacks Rank # 3–Hold, and it also has a longer-term recommendation of "Neutral". A Hold rating indicates that the stock, over the next one to three months, will perform at an annualized rate of 10.56%, very similar to the S&P 500.

Relative Valuation

In terms of valuation, the stock sells at a P/B of 1.2x, trading at a discount compared to an average of 1.2x for the industry. To use another metric, its price-to-sales ratio of 0.45x is below the industry average of 0.91x. Both metrics indicate that the stock is relatively undervalued to its peers.

Earnings per share (EPS) decreased in a huge amount in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago (-$0.78 vs -$0.29). We include in the next graph the stock price because EPS often lead the stock price movement.

1395976850217.png

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. With a ROE of -7.19% is below the industry mean of 5.06%. Other more attractive option in terms of this ratio is LSI Corporation (LSI) with a ROE of 8.68%.

Final Comment

Xyratex´s revenue growth was negative (30.22% compared to the previous quarter) and the net income has significantly decreased by 169% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from -$7.94 million to -$21.37 million. On the other hand, it has a solid financial position with good debt levels and strong cash flow from operations. Apart from that, we expect the ClusterStor will grow at good rates, so I would recommend investors to consider adding the stock for their long-term portfolios.

Hedge fund gurus have also been active in the company in fourth quarter 2013. Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) has taken long position in the stock.

Disclosure: Patricio Kehoe holds no position in any stocks mentioned.

Utility Funds: Low-Risk Trio

Hot Financial Companies To Buy For 2014

For a low-risk investment, look at utility funds; they tend to be conservative, low-beta, defensive, and dividend paying, explains Bruce Vanderveen in Personal Finance.

Utilities provide essential electric and gas to their customers, so their services are always in demand. Surprises, both good and bad, are relatively rare.

In recent years, easily traded and inexpensive ETFs have proliferated. The utility sector alone has 22 of them. Also, established wealth management groups have many utility fund offerings. Below are three of the best to consider.

Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) is the largest utility ETF; it has $5 billion in assets under management and currently has holdings in 32 large (mostly electric) US utilities.

Since the ETF owns a basket of (mostly) low-beta utility stocks, XLU is ideal for passive investors who wish to invest in a safe, broad-based, and dividend-paying US utility fund. XLU currently yields 3.7%.

Including dividends, XLU returned an annual average of 11.2% over the last five years and 11.4% over the last 12 months. The annual expense ratio is low at 0.18%.

Vanguard Utilities ETF (VPU) is similar to XLU. It has the same top ten holdings, but has a more diverse base, with smaller utilities included.

VPU is ideal for passive investors who want a broad-based stake in the US utility industry. The current annual yield is 3.6%.

VPU boasts a five-year return averaging 12% annually, including 12% over the last year. Vanguard funds have low annual expense ratios and VPU, with a 0.14% number, does not disappoint.

Fidelity Select Utilities Portfolio (US:FSUTX) is actively managed and seeks capital appreciation for its investors by investing in the equities of selected North American utility companies.

FSUTX is more concentrated and less diversified in its holdings than most utility funds, so stability and yield may be a concern for some investors. But FSUTX has returned an annualized 14.6% over five years and 17.4% over the last 12 months. There is a 0.79% annual expense ratio.

The above funds all invest in utilities but differ in their focus. XLU and VPU will appeal to passive investors for whom safety and income are paramount, while FSUTX is a little farther out on the risk curve but may offer more potential capital appreciation.

4 Stocks Under $10 Triggering Breakouts

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

>>3 Hot Stocks to Trade (or Not)

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

>>5 Hated Earnings Stocks You Should Love

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside.

ChinaNet Online

ChinaNet Online (CNET), through its subsidiaries, provides business-to-businesses Internet services for small and medium enterprises sales networks in the People's Republic of China. This stock closed up 7.3% to $1.75 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.88

52-Week Range: $0.41-$2.75

Tuesday's Volume: 359,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 241,280

From a technical perspective, CNET spiked sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $1.58 with above-average volume. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last few weeks, with shares moving between $1.54 on the downside and $1.88 on the upside. Shares of CNET are now quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if CNET manages to take out resistance at $1.88 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CNET as long as it's trending above support at $1.58 or above $1.54 and then once it sustains a move or close above $1.88 with volume that hits near or above 241,280 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then CENT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.14 or its 52-week high at $2.75.

Verso Paper

Verso Paper (VRS) produces and sells coated papers in the U.S. This stock closed up 4.6% to $2.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $2.52-$2.70

52-Week Range: $0.52-$5.55

Tuesday's Volume: 147,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 817,832

From a technical perspective, VRS trended higher here right off some near-term support at $2.50 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $1.96 to $2. Following that bottom, shares of VRS have started to uptrend and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if VRS manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.84 to $3 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VRS as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $2.50 or at $2.32 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 817,832 shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then VRS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.32 to $3.40. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give VRS a chance to tag $4 to $4.50.

Identive Group

Identive Group (INVE) provides secure identification solutions that allow people to gain access to the buildings, networks, information, systems and services in the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific. This stock closed up 4.4% to 95 cents per share in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $0.89-$0.99

52-Week Range: $0.49-$1.55

Tuesday's Volume: 841,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 625,033

From a technical perspective, INVE bounced notably higher here right off its 50-day moving average of 90 cents per share with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of 73 cents per share to its recent high of $1.05. During that uptrend, shares of INVE have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of INVE are now starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if INVE manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.05 to $1.10 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in INVE as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of 89 cents per share or above more support at 85 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 625,033 shares. If that breakout kicks off soon, then INVE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.30 to $1.60.

Pampa Energia SA

Pampa Energia SA (PAM), together with its subsidiaries, generates, transmits and distributes electricity in Argentina. This stock closed up 2.6% to $5.09 a share in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $4.88-$5.10

52-Week Range: $2.85-$6.93

Tuesday's Volume: 96,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 131,568

From a technical perspective, PAM jumped higher here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $5 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is starting to push shares of PAM within range of triggering another breakout trade. That trade will hit if PAM manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $5.20 to $5.35 and then once it clears some past resistance at $5.55 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PAM as long as it's trending above its 200-day moving average of $4.60 or above more near-term support at$4.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 131,568 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PAM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $6 to $6.32, or even $6.80.

John Macdougall/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images Wrong kind of crane.

Shares of Manitowoc have gained 33% so far in 2014, easily besting Caterpillar’s (CAT) 6.6% rise, Deere’s (DE) 3.1% drop, Joy Global’s (JOY) 3.1% fall and Terex’s (TEX) 2.3% advance.

So why the Manitowoc downgrade? It comes down to valuation. Jefferies’ Stephen Volkmann and team explain:

Following the 37% increase in shares since the start of the year we believe that the valuation has become stretched. While [Manitowoc] is managing the downturn well, our channel checks and conversations with industry participants continue to support our belief that cranes will be a 2015 story. The shares of [Manitowoc] currently trade at an EV/Sales multiple of 137% and an EV/EBITDA multiple of 11.1x on our 2014 estimates, significant premiums to the closest competitor [Terex] (80% EV/Sales, 8.0x EV/EBITDA). [Manitowoc] is now trading in line with our SoP valuation.

Shares of Manitowoc have dropped 4.9% to $30.97 at 3:26 p.m. today, while Caterpillar has fallen 0.6% to $96.81, Deere has declined 1.4% to $88.55, Terex is off 1.7% at $42.97 and Joy Global has gained 0.3% to $56.67.

Customers not scared off by GM recall

chevy cobalt lot

Consumers haven't been scared away from the GM cars involved in the company's recall, such as the now out of production Chevrolet Cobalt.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Recent headlines about recalls haven't been great for General Motors. But there has been little impact at used and new car lots.

Despite an ignition switch problem tied to 12 deaths, the out-of-production models recalled by GM continue to attract customer interest, according to sales and price trackers Kelley Blue Book and Cars.com.

The services say prices for most of the vehicles involved -- Chevrolet Cobalt and HHR, Pontiac's G5 and Solstice, and Saturn's Sky and Ion -- are up slightly or unchanged. About 1.6 million of the cars, from model years 2003 through 2007, have been recalled by the automaker.

One of the reasons that pricing has held up is that the number of recalled models available for sale has declined due to normal seasonal factors. There are traditionally fewer used cars on sale in March compared to earlier in the year.

Another reason pricing has remained firm is that the cars are not very expensive to begin with. On average, they have about 100,000 miles on them, so they usually cost between $4,000 to $8,000, said Kelley analyst Alec Gutierrez.

"People shopping these cars are shopping for bargains," he said. "These prices tend to move pretty broadly, and pretty slowly."

The price figures were collected before the latest GM recall announced Monday, affecting 1.2 million crossover SUVs, 300,000 full-size commercial vans and 65,000 Cadillacs. Unlike the ignition recall, there were no deaths or injuries associated with the latest recalls.

It was too soon to judge any impact of the latest recall on those sales prices.

GM's new car sales are also unlikely to take a big hit, according to experts. The company's current vehicles have received much better marks on quality than the poor quality cars that helped take the automaker into bankruptcy in 2009. . In fact, GM was named highest quality automaker by J.D. Power in 2013 for the first time in its history.

"My gut says GM has not lost the goodwill that it's built up in the last few years," said Gutierrez. "Provided that GM is able to get this fix out there, and we don't get a new story about severity getting worse, this will pass for GM."

Best Cheapest Stocks To Own Right Now

Past history with high-profile recalls, such as the instances of unintended acceleration with Toyota in 2010, and the Ford Explorer/Firestone recall in 2000, also suggest sales of all GM vehicles won't take a hit.

"History says customer's reactions to recalls are never as negative as one would think," said Jesse Toprak, chief analyst with Cars.com.

How much is that doggie in the window? Try $2M

A golden-haired Tibetan mastiff puppy has reportedly been sold for a whopping $2 million in China, potentially making it the world's most expensive dog.

The pup was sold at a premium pet fair in the eastern province of Zhejiang on Tuesday, fetching 12 million yuan ($1.95 million), according to AFP, which cites a report in Chinese newspaper Qianjiang Evening News.

The breeder, who sold the puppy to a property developer, is reported to have told the paper that the mastiff had "lion's blood," and that a similar dog had sold for 6 million yuan.

"They have lion's blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs," said breeder Zhang Gengyun.

The hound was 80 centimetres (31 inches) tall, and weighed 90 kilograms (nearly 200 pounds), according to Zhang, who said the breed to could be compared to "nationally treasured pandas" – hence the high price.

Tibetan mastiffs – an ancient breed of dog, with long coats - have become a status symbol among China's growing wealthy classes. In 2011, an 11-month old pup named "Big Splash" sold for $1.5 million, according to NBC news, which reported that the animal was the most expensive dog sold at the time.

The buyer of the pricey puppy wants to breed mastiffs himself, according to the report.

He said that many of his financial-planning clients who were struggling when they first came to him didn't have a clue how much they owed, much less have a plan to pay off their debts. As a result, they weren't getting ahead financially.

How to Rebuild Your Credit Score and Financial Life After a Short Sale

Short Sale Home For Sale Real Estate Sign and House - Left Side. Alamy Short sales continue to increase despite the seeming rebound in housing markets across America. According to RealtyTrac, short sales and foreclosures comprised of 16.2 percent of U.S. home sales in 2013. This was up from 2012, when 14.5 percent of home sales were short sales and foreclosures. In a short sale, the mortgage lender agrees to let a homeowner accept an offer for their home that's less than the amount owed on the loan. The bank takes all the proceeds, but the seller walks away with the remaining debt forgiven. Choosing to go that route will put a serious dent in your credit score, but it's not a fiscal death sentence. You can rebuild your credit and your finances after a short sale. Immediately After a Short Sale of Your Home In many cases, banks and lenders view a short sale as the equivalent to a foreclosure. Credit bureaus and future lenders consider it similarly to a default on your mortgage. The three major credit bureaus list it on your credit reports for seven years, but you can take steps immediately after a short sell to help restore your financial profile. "You should regularly pull your free credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com," says Todd Christensen, director of education for the National Financial Education Center. "For someone who is rebuilding their credit, they could consider accessing one of their three available reports every four months in order to check for accuracy in addition to any unfamiliar or fraudulent activity." Another critical task is to ensure that your loan balance has been forgiven. If it hasn't been, you could find a collection company coming after you. Be aware, you also must claim the forgiven debt as income when you next file taxes. Building and rebuilding credit is like the fable of the tortoise and the hare: Slow and steady wins the race. The short sale has less of an impact on your credit score each year after the event. One to Four Years After a Short Sale In those first few years, focus on small financial victories. "A simple and free way to begin the credit rebuilding progress is, first to ensure all utility, cell phone contracts and Internet provider payments are made on time and in full," says Christensen. Ask these companies if they report your on-time payments to at least one of the three major national credit bureaus. He says they're not typically required to do so, but they often will if asked. The credit bureaus don't give utility and cell phone payments as much weight as good credit card stewardship, but they will help move the needle. And every little bit helps. You may also find that without notice, other creditors will lower your credit limit after your short sale. Wording giving them that option is often included in the fine print of the contracts and user agreements of credit cards and other debt. Don't let that be a reason to make any more damaging credit moves. "Keep paying bills on time, avoid applying for new credit, and don't close credit card accounts," says Miranda Reiter, a certified financial planner at She & Money Financial Planning. "You'll want to keep the cards open so that as you pay down your balances, your debt to credit available ratio is lowered, which improves your score." Good budgeting can be one of your most vital tools in the years following a short sale. With a damaged credit score, you may find yourself with little to no ability to depend on credit cards as a backup plan. So it's doubly important that you work to build up a solid emergency fund and prepare a written monthly family budget. Several Years After a Short Sale If you do not have many open accounts after a short sale, you may want to try rebuilding your credit score by applying for a secured credit card. You may also be able to find a small loan offed by a bank or credit union in your area that specializes in helping to build up your credit. "A secured card is one in which you put up a certain amount on deposit that you cannot access," says Cara Pierce, a housing financial specialist with ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions. "The lender in turn gives the borrower a credit card with a limit in the same amount of the deposit." A secured credit card works just like an unsecured one. There is little risk to the banks and credit unions that offer these cards because your deposit acts as collateral and your self-imposed credit limit. These cards are a good way for a borrower to rebuild credit. You're not entirely out of luck if you'd like to try again as a homeowner, either. In many cases, you do not have to wait the full seven years it will take for the short sale to vanish from your credit report before you can buy another home. "If you were current on your mortgage payments and also did not have a job loss, you can apply for a VA loan two years after selling a home in a short sale," says Phil Georgiades, chief loan steward for VA Home Loan Centers. "You can also apply for a FHA mortgage three years after a short sale and a conventional mortgage four to seven years after your short sale."
