Top 5 Consumer Stocks For 2015

Extreme winter weather hobbled economic growth across much of the nation in January and early February, with a third of Federal Reserve bank districts reporting weakening or unchanged activity, the Fed said Wednesday.

The Fed's Beige Book, named for the color of its cover, appears to support many economists' suspicion that cold and stormy weather has been a significant reason for an early-year slowdown in job growth, retail sales, manufacturing and housing.

That suggests economic growth could bounce back sharply in coming months as consumers unleash pent-up demand for everything from new homes to apparel. Some economists have suggested other factors such as increased mortgage rates may also be at play, a theory that would cast doubt on the strength of an economic recovery that's generally expected to gain momentum this year.

Advisors' Opinion:

"No one wants to annoy the consumer," Bill Bean, director of tradeinsight at SAB Miller (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY  ) , told the New York Times."However, there are many annoying ads that sell products, and it's very difficult to tell what annoys one consumer and what pleases another."

  • [By Charles Sizemore]

At current valuations, STZ stock is not attractive relative to its larger and better diversified megabrewer rivals — all of which have better exposure to emerging markets. As long-term holdings, I see better value in Heinken, Anheuser-Busch InBev and SAB Miller (SBMRY).

  • [By Tony Reading]

I'm less familiar with South African-based SABMiller (LSE: SAB  ) (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY  ) , though its market cap is slightly larger than Diageo after its shares are up 50% over the year. I think of it as expensive, but a quick check on my data provider shows the two shares equally rated with prospective price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios of 19.7 and yields of 2.3% for Diageo and 2.2% for SABMiller. So maybe it's time to do a little portfolio rebalancing.

  • [By Brianna Valleskey]

As Theron pointed out, many companies that are big global players also have South African roots, including SABMiller (OTC: SBMRY), Compagnie Financière Richemont (OTC: CFRUY) and BHP Billiton Limited (NYSE: BHP).

Top 5 Shipping Stocks To Watch Right Now

Mr. Softy is buzzing these days. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) stock hit a new five-year high earlier this month, and it moved higher this past week on positive developments with its Windows 8.1 update for its flagship operating system.

However, we can't kid ourselves. Microsoft still has a lot of problems. We were reminded on Friday, when Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty slashed her forecast for the PC market this year. She now sees a 10% decline in PC units shipping this quarter, revised lower from her earlier prediction of a mere 5% decline.

Yes, she did consider the generally well-received Windows 8 update from earlier in the week. Folks just aren't buying desktops and laptops the way they used to, and that shines a brighter light on Microsoft's shortcomings in the areas that are growing.

Tablets and smartphones are the computing gadgets that are growing these days, and Microsoft trails Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Android badly on both fronts.

Bear of the Day: Deere (DE) - Bear of the Day

Deere & CO (DE) is seeing estimates for 2014 slide deeper and as a result it is a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). It is the Bear of the Day.A Few Recent DowngradesOver the last few weeks, a few brokerages may lowered their ratings on DE. The most recent was Piper Jaffray, which lowered their rating from Overweight to Neutral during the second week of July. That followed an even bigger call from JP Morgan in late June. The brokerage lowered their rating from Neutral to Underweight on the stock.Company DescriptionDeere makes agriculture and turf equipment, and construction and forestry equipment. Its Agriculture and Turf segment provides agriculture and turf equipment, and related service parts, including tractors; loaders; combines, corn pickers, cotton and sugarcane harvesters. Deere was founded in 1837 and is headquartered in Moline, Illinois. Earnings HistoryThe company has a relatively good history of beating the number. In each of the last two quarters they were able to post a positive earnings surprise. The two quarters preceding those were another story. Two straight misses, including one with a negative earnings surprise of more than 14% takes the luster off the two recent beats.Earnings Estimates Stuck In The MudEstimates for DE have declined of late. The 2013 estimates are moving lower, but not by that much. Peaking at $8.59 in April they have ticked lower to $8.52. But that is not where the real pessimism is. The 2014 Zacks Consensus Estimate has moved lower in each month since it reached a high of $8.93 in February. The number dipped to $8.67 in May and is now down to $8.53.The question becomes when will estimates stop falling?ValuationThe valuation picture for DE is a little mixed... with a good PE valuation and a concern over the price to book. At 10x, the multiple for both trailing and forward PE, DE compares favorably to the industry average of 14x. The 4x price to book multiple, however, is much higher than the 2.5x industry average. Price to sales is in! line with the industry average. When looking at growth rates, investors would likely be concerned by a -2.5% top line growth rate in 2013 and a 0.2% increase for 2014. Similarly, EPS growth expectations of 0.2% for 2014 do not compare favorably with the 12% industry average. The Chart The price and consensus chart really shows the story of a stock that had been a darling of Wall Street over the last few years but has recently run into trouble. The colored lines represent different years earnings estimates, and the nice 45 degree angle has not only flattened out, it has turned around. If estimates continue to decrease, the stock price will likely follow the estimates lower. Brian Bolan is a Stock Strategist for Zacks.com. Top 10 Wireless Telecom Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on SurModics (Nasdaq: SRDX  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Harvey Jones]

LONDON -- If you look at recent Fool articles aboutVodafone (LSE: VOD  ) (NASDAQ: VOD  ) , it's all dividends, dividends, dividends. That's hardly surprising, given that the mobile communications giant yields 5.2%, more than 10 times Bank of England base rate. Only a handful of FTSE 100 companies yield more, and they're mostly troubled insurers such asResolution,RSA Insurance, andAviva. So yes, Vodafone is a happy, honking dividend machine, and hooray for that. But is that all?

As discussions intensify over the joint ownership of Verizon Wireless by both Vodafone (NASDAQ: VOD  ) and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ  ) , and the potential buyout by Verizon Communications, the specifics of the deal continue to garner attention. While the complete takeover would make Verizon the largest phone carrier in the United States, beating out current leader AT&T (NYSE: T  ) , there are issues for the company that are important for investors to consider. To complete the deal, Verizon will need to raise debt capital and must contend with a premium price.

On the long side, Alliance! Fiber Optic Products Inc. (AFOP)  has held support at around 17.00 and bounced, reaching 20.43 intraday on Tuesday, before closing at 20.04. That was a gain of 35 cents, or 1.78%, on 1.1 million shares, an increase in volume. It's near resistance. It did back off 20.64, the high it had about two weeks ago, and if it can get through that, it should test 21.00, and then 24.00, my targets.

Advisors' Opinion:

First up is Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB), the $2.2 billion hotel owner with 14 hotels under its umbrella. The firm started off the year rallying hard, climbing more than 14% from the start of January to early March. Since then, shares have been slugging sideways. But the sideways moves are laying the framework for a second rally leg in PEB this May. Here's how to trade it:

Pebblebrook is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $35, and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as PEB bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer to a breakout above that $35 price ceiling. When that breakout happens, we've got a buy signal.

Momentum adds some confidence to the staying power in PEB's eventual breakout -- 14-day RSI has been making higher lows since early February, well before the triangle pattern started forming in Pebblebrook's price. That said, it's crucial to wait for this stock to catch a bid above $35 before putting cash in the trade.

I get somewhat amused every day by the thousands of traders who spend all day trying to figure out what the hot stocks like Twitter (TWTR) and Facebook (FB) are going to do every day. Owning stocks like these two banks — or ones I have mentioned before, like ESSA Bancorp (ESSA) and Charter Financial (CHFN) — will be a far more profitable and relaxing endeavor over the next few years.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

Right now I know that silver miners like Pan American Silver (PAAS) and Coeur Mining (CDE) are very cheap on an asset basis. I know that oil and gas producers like Swift Energy (SFY) and WPX Energy (WPX) are priced as if no one will ever use the stuff again. I know that small banks like Cape Bancorp (CBNJ) and Essa Bancorp (ESSA) are crazy-cheap — and if the world does not end, those stocks will be a lot higher in a few years.
