Top 10 Performing Stocks To Buy Right Now

Today I'm going to show you how to find the best-performing small-cap stocks of 2014.

Employing the approach in 2013 helped spot some huge winners...

Puma Biotechnology, for example, jumped 452.2% in 2013, on a series of positive results and news related to its various clinical trials programs - a classic disruptive technology.

Tesla Motors is another great example. The luxury electric automaker trounced earnings estimates way back in the first quarter of 2013, which led to analyst upgrades... and, of course, a 344.1% gain for shareholders.

And then there was Netflix, which gained 279.6% after the company crushed fourth-quarter 2012 earnings, proving the company had righted its ship.

All very different businesses and industries, but one thing in common: sparks. They come in different shapes and sizes, but they all do the same thing: make you a lot of money.

This year's first batch of gains can come quickly, too. Plug Power (PLUG) generated a spark on Jan. 2, confirming it had met fourth-quarter 2012 order targets. Shares jumped 34% that following morning... and were up another 35% by the next afternoon.

Today, these payment mechanisms are restricted to premium SMS, direct carrier billing, website purchases through a mobile browser, and Near Field Communications (NFC). NFC is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices that allow them to communicate with each other without touching, but by being in close proximity. NFC devices can be used in contactless payment systems, similar to those used in credit cards, to allow mobile payment to replace or supplement existing credit card and debit card type systems. The combined market for all types of mobile payments is expected to reach more than $600 billion globally by 2013. Google, Inc., a Baron investment, is currently the only company that has a large commercial NFC deployment in the market today. As Google pushes further into local advertising and promotions, it plans to utilize Google Wallet to enhance its relationship with consumers and businesses. Volcano (NASDAQ: VOLC) shares dropped 15.89% to $20.49 in pre-market trading after the company reported Q3 revenue. JP Morgan downgraded the stock from Overweight to Neutral and lowered the price target from $29.00 to $24.00.

Instead of an eruption, Volcano (VOLC) got an earnings-induced collapse instead.

    Associated Press

Medical-device maker Volcano said its third quarter profit would miss Wall Street forecasts, and 2013 sales would also disappoint. And 2014? Well, that didn’t look too exciting other.

JPMOrgan analyst Christopher Pasquale and team have had enough:

We are downgrading VOLC shares to Neutral from Overweight following the company negative 3Q preannouncement and disappointing initial 2014 growth outlook Monday after the close. While we continue to see significant long-term potential for Volcano technologies, we are concerned by persistent headwinds to its core IVUS franchise and slowing FFR growth. With our conviction in a pipeline-driven reacceleration reduced and visibility into meaningful new growth drivers unlikely for several quarters, we are moving to the sidelines.

Canaccord Genuity’s Jason Mills and Jeffrey Chu also cut Volcano to Hold–just a quarter after upgrading it–and even today’s drop might not make it worth buying. They explain why:

Our upgrade of VOLC last quarter was predicated on the improving trends in the core IVUS business, FFR continuing as a long-term growth engine, and the potential material gross margin expansion. While Q3 results included pockets of good news, adverse trends predominated.
While US IVUS rebounded modestly, driven by peripheral IVUS (+40% Y/Y), IVUS and FM results in Japan were very disconcerting to us (-19%, +8%, respectively), and portend share loss, in our estimation. Also, while we still expect significant gross margin expansion long term, it seems we may have to wait longer than expected.

In sum, we would not aggressively buy weakness unless the stock is over-penalized on these results – i.e. below $20.

While shares of Volcano have dropped 15% to $20.74, large-cap medical device companies are having a solid day. Boston Scienti

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 specialty chemicals player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Synthesis Energy Systems (SYMX), which provides various proprietary gasification technology systems and solutions to the energy and chemical industries worldwide. This stock is off to a red hot start so far in 2014, with shares up a whopping 191%.

If you glance at the chart for Synthesis Energy Systems, you'll see that this stock has been uptrending over the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.39 to its recent high of $1.85 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SYMX have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has started to push shares of SYMX within range of triggering a major breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SYMX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.85 to $1.86 a share and then once it takes out more key overhead resistance levels at $1.93 to $2 and $2.09 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 594,782 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then SYMX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.44 to its 52-week high at $2.49 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give SYMX a chance to tag $3 to $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy SYMX off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.60 to $1.55 a share. One can also buy SYMX off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

If anything calls the higher-rates excuse into question its the strong performance of gold stocks. Royal Gold (RGLD) gained 6.3% to $61.53 and Newmont Mining (NEM) jumped 4% to $33.32. If yields were really heading higher, hold stocks should fall, though these days, I’m not really sure of anything. Homebuilders, another group that has been punished by rising yields, also surged higher today.
